LGBT Equality In the States

LGBT movement executives and funders can use the information in this section to inform funding and programmatic strategies within and across states. Potential uses of the data include:

• Quickly assess both pro- and anti-LGBT laws for specific issues; compare levels of LGBT legal equality across states and regions; and estimate the impact of potential anti- or pro-LGB state legislation.
• Establish statewide capacity benchmarks for LGBT groups to ensure adequate LGBT representation and services.
• Establish fundraising and donor goals or benchmarks based on state LGB populations, or estimate the per-capita impact of donations to LGB organizations in specific states.

The state profiles and maps present data on statewide LGB populations; current state laws related to LGBT equality; revenues of LGBT nonprofit organizations; and “out” public officials in the states.
