Momentum Report: An Analysis of Key Indicators

Title:
The 2009 Momentum Report - An Analysis of Key Indicators of LGBT Equality in the US
Abstract:

This report organizes and analyzes 20 indicators of the LGBT movement's progress toward securing political and social equality for LGBT Americans. The analysis is organized into three categories: eight cultural and social indicators; nine political and legal indicators; and three indicators of the LGBT movement’s organizational and financial capacity. Most indicators date back to the mid-1990s, with some beginning in the early 1980s.

The report delivers mostly good news for the LGBT population: the general public, over time, is becoming more supportive of LGBT legal and social equality; anti-discrimination and relationship recognition laws cover an increasing number of people; and the movement’s finances and overall capacity have been growing (although this latter point might change once organization and foundation data "catch up" with the economic downturn).

But the report also shows areas of concern for the LGBT movement: HIV/AIDS is resurgent among men who have sex with men; most of the LGB population still lives in a state that does not recognize their relationships; and parenting rights are slowly being eroded across the country.

Bottom Line: A high-level analysis of progress toward LGBT equality, helping both organizations and funders assess where they need to concentrate their time and resources.
