2008 State of the States report on state-based LGBT advocacy groups

Title: 2008 State of the States Report
Abstract:

This report, prepared jointly by MAP and the Equality Federation, provides LGBT movement organizations, allies, partners, and funders with an overview of statewide LGBT advocacy organizations, including their capacity, the issues they are addressing, and the strategies and tactics they employ to achieve LGBT equality.

The 2008 edition of the report analyzes data on 41 state-based groups in 36 states. Findings are presented in three main sections:

  • the capacity of organizations working in the states, including their legal types, revenues, staffs, and board;
  • the electoral and policy work they engage in, including an overview of strategies; and
  • information on the national organizations that provide support to the state groups.
Bottom line: Information that can help craft strategies to achieve local, state, and national LGBT political victories and help donors determine how to direct their funding of state-based work. The report can also help those who are new to the LGBT movement become more familiar with state-based work in general.
