Retaining LGBT Movement Donors

Headline: Donor turnover in the LGBT movement
Title: Contextualizing LGBT Movement Donor Turnover – and What to Do About It
Abstract: Based on data MAP collected through the Standard Annual Reporting project, donor turnover is an ongoing challenge for the LGBT movement. Several LGBT organizations asked MAP to research the issue in more detail and offer initial steps to improve donor retention rates.

This brief report (which was presented at the spring 2008 meeting of the LGBT National Policy Roundtable) provides movement organizations with:
  • donor turnover data in the LGBT movement compared to other nonprofit organizations;
  • an overview of the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, a joint effort of the Urban Institute and the Association of Fundraising Professionals that aims to reduce donor turnover in nonprofits (organizations can participate in the Project for free and with minimal effort); and
  • some additional resources organizations might want to consider as they work to improve donor retention.
Bottom line: A starting point to help organizations retain their donors and fine-tune their development programs.
