Building LGBT Nonprofit Leadership Talent

Title: Building LGBT Nonprofit Leadership Talent – Thoughts and Suggestions for LGBT Organizations and Funders
Abstract: Rooted in a deep appreciation for the heroic role that movement leaders have played in the struggle for LGBT rights, Building LGBT Nonprofit Leadership Talent makes the case that supporting and strengthening leadership talent should be an explicit, long-term priority of the movement for LGBT equality. The report argues that intentional and consistent action to support, nurture and grow LGBT leadership should become an ingrained part of how organizations do their day-to-day work.

MAP provides both a vision and pragmatic recommendations for building LGBT nonprofit leadership talent in the context of a wide range of activities, from staff recruitment and development to deployment, retention and more. The recommendations include several joint initiatives that LGBT organizations can pursue together to strengthen talent building across the movement.

A forward by Matt Foreman and Linda Wood of the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr., Fund articulates seven key implications for grantmakers that support LGBT organizations and the broader movement for equality.
Bottom line: Based on 18 months of research and interviews with more than 50 LGBT nonprofit executives and leadership development and talent management experts, Building LGBT Nonprofit Leadership Talent offers both practical rationale and practical guidance for LGBT organizations and their major funders to support, nurture and grow LGBT leadership.
